If you live in China, you know Wechat is your most essential(必需的) phone application. Everyone that meet in China will have wechat and it is the best way to get together with your friends, keep in touch with your friends back home, communicate with colleagues, and post pictures and links(链接) on your Wechat moments. Even the Chinese Communist Party has a wechat account!

Wechat groups are the best way to set up events in Beijing because everyone checks their Wechat. Beijing expats tend to group together in friendship circles and Wechat is used to keep everyone updated on events and dinners. Users in these groups can turn their notifications off so that their phone is beeping every three minutes.

Through wechat, you can share your location through dropping a pin or share a contact’s information. You can save your favorite wechat conversations. You can send a horse and frog sticker or Obama’s head dancing with Beyonce’s body gif to all of your friends. Did you see something ridiculous on the subway? Send your friends a picture using wechat. You can use Dianping to find restaurants(饭馆), hotels(宾馆), scenic spots(风景区), bars(酒吧), and other places in the city. It’s all in Mandarin so you better start practicing. You can video chat your friends and family abroad. If you are in a rush, you can send a voice message to your friends.

How to navigate wechat and use the different features and options in Chinese?

On the homepage, you will see the search bar(搜索栏) to search for contacts.

You can search through your messages and address book(通讯录)

If you want to add a new contact, you go to the Discover(发现) tab. If you want to see what your friends are doing, go the 朋友圈 Moments page.

If you want to add a friend, you can scan(扫一扫)。
