August is culture immersion month in Sinology Institute and our topic is Beijing Opera.
Beijing opera is a form of traditional Chinese theatre which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. The costumes in Beijing opera are elaborate and colorful, in contrast to the usually empty stage. Every movement made by the actors is full of symbolism. The skill of the performers is judged by the beauty of their movements.
Above all else, the different colors of masks have different meanings. From facial masks you will learn what each color means to Chinese people and how the design tells stories about the personalities of each figure in the opera.
