Beijing is an amazing city with many different types of great and delicious food. China has many provinces (省) with many distinct flavors, taste (味道), and variations. Today, I am going to share with you some of favorite foods as well as some of the more interesting foods that I have had in China.
My name is Kristen and I work at the Sinology Institute. I began my journey in China in 2010 when I was studied abroad (留学) in Shanghai and Beijing. I've eaten a lot of Chinese food since then and I'm going to share (分享) my experiences with you.
When I first came to China, I had a very simple (简单) understanding of Chinese food. I knew fried rice (炒饭) and dumplings (饺子), but did not understand how diverse (多种多样) and delicious regional dishes could be. In the United States, people usually just eat pork dumplings. In China, you can have boiled dumplings(水饺) or fried dumplings(煎饺) with lamb (羊肉), chicken (鸡肉), pork (猪肉), beef (牛肉), or shrimp (虾) along with many different types of vegetables (蔬菜). There are so many options (选择) to choose from.
One of my favorite types of food in Beijing is Sichuan (四川) food. Sichuan is a province in southwest China and the food is famous for its spicy (辣) food. Whenever I have friends visit (访问) Beijing, I always take them to my favorite Sichuan Restaurant and order Twice-cooked pork (回锅肉) and Sichuan dumplings (钟水饺). Sichuan dishes have very bold (大胆) and spicy flavors. The Mapo Tofu (麻婆豆腐) is another very popular (流行) dish and your mouth will be on fire after eating it. Last time that I went to eat Sichuan food, my eyes were bigger than my stomach (眼大肚子小).
Xinjiang (新疆) is another really delicious type of Chinese food. Xinjiang Province is located in Northwest China. Xinjiang has many Muslims (穆斯林) who cannot eat pork so Xinjiang restaurants have a lot of lamb dishes. Lamb is very expensive in America but relatively cheap in China. You can go to a Xinjiang restaurant and get a whole lamb leg (羊腿) cooked over an open fire. Make sure you bring friends.
There are many restaurants that serve Donkey Burgers (驴肉火烧) in China. It might seem a little weird but the meat is actually very tender (嫩). You can eat the donkey meat in a sandwich (三明治) or with other side dishes.
