Getting books in other languages but Chinese

Although your goal may be to master the Chinese language (and reading a lot of Chinese language material will definitely help in your endeavor) you will inevitably have the crave for some reading materials in your own language. And despite the rise of the internet and ebooks there are some who simply like the feel of a bound book in their hands. Now, be it in English, French, German or Korean, there are some well stacked book stores in Beijing that cater to just these needs. However, be prepared to pay a small premium; both over buying the same books in your own country and their Chinese language equivalents. If you are a book worm and want to save big then better get into learning Chinese fast.

The 外文书店 Beijing Foreign Language Book Store

Located conveniently on 王府井, the Foreign Language Book Store is the best choice for anyone with the Sunday blues and way to much time on his or her hands. The first floor features all the import novels and you can find most books there. Its close relative is the 北京图书大厦 on the north eastern corner of the 西单 intersection. It caters mainly to the Chinese but a sizable collection of foreign books can be found on the underground level.

Page One, the Bookworm etc.

The eastern areas of Beijing feature the book chain Page One which features slick decoration and staff that does not tell you to get lost if you sit there for hours on end. It is almost like a library if you are not too afraid of coming across as shameless. The Bookworm in 三里屯 is actually a café, book store combination. It features regular literary readings and some great coffee. If you are willing to spend a little money in the comfort of people who remind you of home, this may be a better choice for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
